U.S. Navy orders submarine detection buoys

Expendable sonobuoys to detect acoustic emissions or reflections from submarines are being supplied to the U.S. Navy by ERAPSCO.
The AN/SSQ-125 sonobuoy to be supplied is a multi-static, active coherent system featuring digital signal processing with digital compass capability, providing determination of the target's bearing, localization and tracking by aircraft. It is a key element in anti-submarine warfare.
The systems ERAPSCO will deliver will be manufactured by the company's parent organizations, the Sparton Corp. and Ultra Electronics-USSI. The manufacturing subcontracts are worth $10.1 million to Sparton and $7.8 million to USSI.
ERAPSCO said production of the AN/SSQ-125s will take place at Sparton's facility in DeLeon Springs, Fla., and at USSI's facility in Columbia City, Ind.

No details were disclosed on the number of systems that will be produced but ERAPSCO said it expected delivery of the sonobuoys will be completed in early 2015.
