Indonesia to Build Submarines Alone

Within the next decade, Indonesian government is to place orders for several diesel-electric submarines at national shipyards. 

According to Indonesian defense minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro, the country needs diesel-electric submarines to control its vast exclusive maritime economic zone. 

Presently, Indonesian Navy operates two Chakra-class diesel subs (Type-209/1300) built by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft in 70's. The contract for three Chang Bogo-class submarines (Type-209/1200) was tied with Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) in Dec 2011. First two subs will be built by a prime contractor in South Korea, and the third sub – in Indonesia by PT Pal. Share of national industry in the submarine construction program will gradually increase so that in prospect Indonesia will build submarines all alone, Yusgiantoro told news agency Antara. 

 

As for the defense minister, Indonesia needs about 10 submarines to patrol its vast sea territories. Indonesian military expects PT Pal to design certain components for diesel subs which will help in the future to build submarines independently. 

Indonesia orders three submarines to South Korea

The Indonesian Ministry of Defence announced in early August the official order of three submarines to South Korea. These buildings are type 209/1400, a German model that the South Koreans have learned to build technology transfer for their own navy (9 copies commissioned between 1993 and 2001, 8 built locally). Length of 61.3 meters, the future submarines Indonesian present a displacement of about 1600 tons submerged. Slightly larger than the 209 of the South Korean Navy, they will have eight torpedo tubes.Delivery is scheduled between 2015 and 2018. The first will be made in Korea, Indonesia second part and the third to be built entirely by Indonesian site.

Indonesian Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said that the government was expecting to procure a dozen submarines to augment Indonesia's existing fleet by 2024, local media reported on Thursday.

Purnomo said that a deal to purchase three of these submarines was signed in December 2011. The submarines are being built in cooperation with South Korea. He said that the joint-production program will transfer South Korea's technological knowledge of submarines to Indonesia. The first submarine will be entirely the product of South Korea while the second will be built together with Indonesian workers. Purnomo expressed hope that Indonesia would have learned enough about submarines to be able to build the third independently.

"By the third, we hope to be able to build our own submarines. They will be built in Indonesia, by Indonesians." Purnomo said on Wednesday.

Indonesia orders 3 submarines from ROK

Indonesian Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said on Tuesday the defense ministry had officially ordered three new submarines from a South Korean dockyard under Transfer of Technology (TOT) scheme.
"The contract had already been signed. There will be transition phase in the production process where Indonesia wants to build one in an Indonesian dockyard," the minister said in his office here.
Under the TOT scheme, one submarine will entirely be built in South Korea, one jointly produced by Indonesian and S. Korean engineers and another one built in Indonesia, the minister said.

The Ministry of Defence of Indonesia and Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding, The Netherlands today signed a contract for the engineering, build and delivery of a SIGMA 10514 Guided Missile Frigate, PKR (Perusak Kawal Rudal). The PKR will be built for the Indonesian Navy, TNI AL, and is to be delivered in 2016. 

The acquisition of this ship is part of the further modernization and expansion of the Indonesian Navy, TNI-AL.
The main missions and tasks of the SIGMA PKR 10514 will be in the domains of naval warfare as well as Maritime Security missions and tasks. Also, the ship may be used for humanitarian support tasks.

The ship will be built according to the successful SIGMA modular building strategy, as a sequel to the earlier built four SIGMA Corvettes for TNI AL. This means that modules of the frigate will be built in Europe as well as locally at PT PAL in Surabaya Indonesia. The assembly and trials of SIGMA PKR 10514 will take place in and from Surabaya, Indonesia.
