Russia Develops Underwater Drones

Russia is developing underwater drones for special tasks, a senior defense industry official said on Friday.
“The U.S. Navy is moving along similar lines,” said Anatoly Shlemov, head of state defense contracts at the United Shipbuilding Corporation.
Although work on those systems began in the USSR in the late 1980s, this is the first time it has been officially announced.
That was why the Soviet Navy abandoned the Piranha submarine program, Shlemov added.
Project 865 Piranha (NATO reporting name Losos) is a midget submarine, designed for special operations and is almost completely silent.

In result of upgrading the characteristics of the vehicle were considerably improved, including characteristics of fire power, mobility, protection and ergonomics, thus generally increasing combat efficiency of the BMP-3 IFV. The vehicle was named BMP-3M.

Russia Is Stockpiling Drones to Spy on Street Protests

Small surveillance drones are starting to be part of police departments across America, and the FAA will soon open up the airspace for more to come. This drone invasion has already raised all kinds of privacy concerns. And if you think that's bad, across the ocean, Russia seems hell-bent on outdoing its former Cold War enemy.
Russia's leading manufacturer of unmanned aerial vehicles, Zala Aero, has provided the Russian government with more than 70 unmanned systems, each containing several aircraft. According to an article published yesterday on Open Democracy Russia, the Kremlin's romance with drones started in 2006, when the Interior Ministry deployed a Zala 421-04M to monitor street protests at a G8 summit in St. Petersburg. The Russian government has also bought drones from Israel.
Vladimir Putin himself is ready to jump on the drone bandwagon. "We need a program for unmanned aircraft. Experts say this is the most important area of development in aviation," he said in early June. "We need a range of all types, including automated strike aircraft, reconnaissance and other types." Indeed, Russia is going to allegedly spend around $ 13 billion on unmanned aerial vehicles through 2020.
According to its Zala executive  Maksim Shinkevich, almost every Interior Ministry air group has a drone these days. Their favorite one? The Zala  421-08M, a 5.5-pound, 31-inch wingspan unmanned vehicle equipped with a camera that can fly for 90 minutes at almost 12,000 feet. At the right angle, a drone like this can take a quality snapshot of a car's license plate. What about, say, a protester's face? "Capturing faces in any detail would however require a very heavy drone with a good camera; more precisely, with a heavy, specialized platform," Shinkevich told Open Democracy Russia.

T-90S Main Battle Tank

The T-90S is the latest development in the T-series of Russian tanks and represents an increase in firepower, mobility and protection. It is manufactured by Uralvagonzavod in Nizhnyi Tagil, Russia.
The T-90S entered service with the Russian Army in 1992. In February 2001, the Indian Army signed a contract for 310 T-90S tanks: 124 were completed in Russia and the rest are being delivered in "knocked down" form for final assembly in India.

The first of these was delivered in January 2004. The locally assembled tanks are christened 'Bhishma'. The tanks are fitted with the Shtora self-protection system and Catherine thermal imagers from Thales of France and Peleng of Belarus. The first ten Bhishma tanks were inducted into the Indian Army in August 2009. India plans to induce 1,640 T-90 tanks by 2020.
In January 2005, it was announced that a further 91 T-90S tanks would be procured for the Russian Army, although this number was later reduced.
By November 2007, it has been estimated that the Russian Army has around 200 T-90 tanks. In August 2007, Thales was awarded a contract to supply 100 of these with the Catherine FC thermal imager. In March 2006, Algeria signed a contract for the supply of 180 T-90S tanks from Uralvagonzavod, to be delivered by 2011. Of the total, 102 tanks were in service with the Algerian Army by 2008.
In November 2006, India ordered a further 330 T-90 tanks, to be licence-built by heavy vehicle factory (HVF), Avadi, Tamil Nadu.
In January 2009, the Greek Cypriot Government approved the purchase of 41 T-90 tanks from Russia. In March 2010, however, the government changed its plans and opted for T-80 tanks against the T-90s. Saudi Arabia placed a $2bn order for helicopters and 150 T-90S MBTs in September 2009. In the same year, Turkmenistan ordered 10 T-90S tanks under a $30m contract.

T-90S armament

The T-90S armament includes one 125mm 2A46M smoothbore gun, stabilised in two axes and fitted with a thermal sleeve. The gun tube can be replaced without dismantling inside the turret. The gun can fire a variety of ammunition including APDS (Armour Piercing Discarding Sabot), HEAT (high-explosive anti-tank), HE-FRAG (high-explosive fragmentation) as well as shrapnel projectiles with time fuses.
The T-90S gun can also fire the 9M119 Refleks (NATO designation AT-11 Sniper) anti-tank guided missile system. The range of the missile is 100m to 4,000m and takes 11.7 sec to reach maximum range. The system is intended to engage tanks fitted with ERA (explosive reactive armour) as well as low-flying air targets such as helicopters, at a range of up to 5km. The missile system fires either the 9M119 or 9M119M missiles which have semi-automatic laser beamriding guidance and a hollow charge warhead. Missile weight is 23.4kg. The guns automatic loader will feed both ordnance and missiles.
Also fitted is a coaxial 7.62mm PKT machine gun and a 12.7mm air defence machine gun. A 5.45mm AKS-74 assault rifle is carried on a storage rack.

Self protection

The T-90 tank is protected by both conventional armour-plating and explosive reactive armour.
The T-90 is fitted with the Shtora-1 defensive aids suite which is produced by Electronintorg of Russia. This system includes infrared jammer, laser warning system with four laser warning receivers, grenade discharging system which produces an aerosol screen and a computerised control system.
It is also fitted with NBC (nuclear, biological and chemical) protection equipment.

Fire control and observation

The T-90S has the 1A4GT integrated fire control system (IFCS) which is automatic but with manual override for the commander. The IFCS contains the gunner's 1A43 day fire control system, gunner's TO1-KO1 thermal imaging sight which has a target identification range of 1.2km to 1.5km and commander's PNK-S sight.
The gunner's 1A43 day FCS comprises: 1G46 day sight / rangefinder with missile guidance channel, 2E42-4 armament stabiliser, 1V528 ballistic computer and DVE-BS wind gauge.
The commander's PNK-4S sight includes a TKN-4S (Agat-S) day / night sight which has identification ranges of 800m (day) and 700m (night).
The driver is equipped with a TVN-5 infrared night viewer.

Propulsion

The T-90S has a liquid-cooled V-84MS 618kW (840hp) four-stroke V-12 piston engine. This engine can be fuelled by T-2 or TS-1 kerosene and A-72 benzine, in addition to diesel. The tank can carry up to 1,600 litres of fuel in the main fuel tanks and fuel drums. The fuel tanks are reinforced with armour plating.
The tank is provided with a snorkel for deep fording and can ford 5m of water with equipment which can be deployed in 20 minutes.
The mechanical transmission includes primary reduction gear, two planetary final gearboxes and two planetary final drives. The running gear features torsion bar suspension with hydraulic shock absorbers at one, two and six road wheel stations and tracks with rubber-metallic pin hinges.

Although a development of the T-72, the T-90 uses a 125mm 2A46 smoothbore tank gun, 1G46 gunner sights, a new engine, and thermal sights. Standard protective measures include a blend of regular steel and Kontakt-5 explosive-reactive armor, laser warning receivers, Nakidka camouflage and the Shtora infrared ATGM jamming system. The EMT-7 electromagnetic pulse (EMP) creator is used in testing but not fitted to T-90s in active service. It is designed and built by Uralvagonzavod, in Nizhny Tagil,
Russia.

The IMR-2MA is the latest generation of Russian IMR-2 engineer obstacle clearing tracked armoured vehicle. The IMR-2MA combat engineer vehicle is designed for mobility operations, creating convoy tracks and accomplishing other engineer tasks. Today, the IMR-2MA is the most efficient and promising combat engineer vehicle. It can perform all types of work under fire, on the battlefield contaminated by nuclear fallout, and in the atmosphere contaminated by aggressive gases, vapours or chemical agents and filled with smoke and dust. Vehicle’s reliability has been proven both in combat and in disaster relief operations. IMR-2MA is equally efficient as a combat engineer vehicle and as an emergency rescue vehicle. IMR-2MA is capable of creating tracks in moderately rugged terrain, low forest, and unbroken snow-covered expanses and on slopes, rooting stumps out, felling trees, breaching abatis, rubble, minefields and non-explosive obstacles. The vehicle can cope with rubble and damaged buildings and structures, dig trenches and foundation pits, dig out sanded in materiel and shelters, fill pits, ditches and ravines, prepare ditches, escarpments, dams, and crosses over tank ditches and escarpments. In the upgraded T-72AG tank the original 780/840 hp engine with a less than optimum performance under hot conditions is replaced by a new 6TD-series diesel engine with associated support elements that has been developed for T-80UD/Oplot MBTs.
Two different diesel engine options are available - the 6TD-1 developing 1,000 hp and the 6TD-2 developing 1,200 hp. Both engines offer real advantages in performance in desert conditions at ambient temperatures of up to 55 degrees above zero, as they have a number of enhancements for operation in high ambient temperatures.

The engines in question are two-stroke multi-fuel liquid-cooled diesels with straight-flow scavenging, with horizontally-placed cylinders and opposed pistons.
Both the 6TD-2 and 6TD-1 will run on various fuels including diesel fuel, petrol, kerosene, jet engine fuel (or their mixture in any proportion).
The power is taken off both sides of the crankshaft. The engine is centered and fixed with the help of three supports: two cylindrical supports co-axial with the power take-off shaft and located at the engine ends and one front support located on the engine bottom surface. This method of engine fixing requires neither adjustment nor centering operations when installing the engine in the power pack compartment.
The compact lay-out of the engine and specific features of its design make it possible to place it transversally in the power pack compartment and co-axially with the gear-boxes. This considerably simplifies the tank transmission and results in very small overall dimensions of the power pack (3.1 cubic metres).
The engine is mounded with the help of three supports:
  • two cylindrical supports arranged coaxially with power take-off shaft and located on the engine ends;
  • one front support located on the engine bottom surface.
This method of installation of the 6TD-1 (6TD-2) engine requires neither adjustment nor centering, which are required when installing the original V46-6 engine.
The main specific features of the power packs fitted with 6TD-1 and 6TD-2 engines consists in the ejection-type cooling system, the high-efficiency engine inlet air cleaning system, the special air intake device enabling the tank to cross water obstacles to a water depth of 1.8 m without preparation, as well as the air-tightness of the power pack compartment.
The tank has a liquid-type closed forced ejection-type cooling system. The cooling system ejector operates by using the energy of the engine exhaust gas. The absence of cooling fans and fan drive reducer decreases considerably the cooling system weight, as well as ensuring a high level of reliability and self-control.
The maximum admissible coolant temperature is up to 130°C, and this together with an ejection-type cooling system enables the tank to operate at ambient air temperature of up to +55°C without any degradation of performance.
The high-efficiency cyclone/cassette air cleaner ensures air purification of dust by 99.8 %, which makes it possible to operate the tank without the need to maintain the air cleaning cassettes under desert conditions for 35 hours of engine operation or for a 1,000 km of run. In case of use of nuclear or chemical weapons, it is possible to operate the air cleaner without the cassettes to prevent them from being filled with radioactive dust or toxic agents.
If compared with the original gear-boxes of the T-72 MBT, the new gear-boxes are enhanced to enable them to operate in interaction with a more powerful 1,200 engine. The enhancement is achieved due to introduction of additional disks in the friction clutches, reinforcement of the reducer part of the epicycle mechanisms and improvement of lubrication of the working components. Besides, the final drives are designed so that they ensure additional reverse movement gears; in so doing, the maximum reverse speed is up to 34 km/h. The tank pivoting capability is also provided. The maximum forward speed is up to 70 km/h.
The modernisation of the power pack in question can be carried out at workshops fitted with lifting equipment with a capacity of up to 15 t, metal cutting equipment and welding equipment (up to 600 A).

The specific features of the power pack compartment with 6TD-1 (6TD-2) engine are as follows:
  • ejection-type liquid cooling system which enables the tank to be operated under conditions of high ambient air temperature (up to +55ºC) without any loss of performance;
  • highly efficient cassette/cyclone air filter which ensures air filtration with efficiency of 99.8%. The air cleaner enables the tank to be operated under dusty conditions for 35 working hours (1000 km of run) without necessity to maintain the air cleaner;
  • air-tightness of the power pack compartment and availability of a special air intake device which enables the tank to cross water obstacles to a water dept of 1.8 m without preparation.

    The transmission installed in the tank provides increased reverse speed and pivoting movement (on-the sport turning).


    Modernisation of the power pack compartment can be carried out at small enterprises in the shops equipped with lifting equipment with capacity of up to 15 t, metal-cutting equipment (plasma cutting or gas cutting) and welding equipment (up to 600 A).

    To enhance the T-72AG tactical mobility, the tank can be fitted with a satellite navigation system which ensures the following:
    • determining the tank's coordinates by using two satellite systems, viz. GPS NAVSTAR (USA) and GLONASS (Russia). The readiness time is within 5 minutes. The mean square error in determining coordinates is within 20 m and does not depend on the distance covered;
    • generating, transmitting, receiving and displaying the text information. The information is introduced with the help of a keyboard and is transmitted through a digital radio channel by using the standard radio set. The radio coverage in cross country is up to 20 km. The received information is displayed on the screen;
    • storing and processing the pre-selected routes. It is possible to pre-select up to 10 routes, each containing up to 50 check-points;
    • providing the driver with data about the required turning angle to ensure movement towards the next route check-point or the destination point;
    • collecting information about the friendly force location and displaying this information on the screen in the digital form or in the form of a mnemonic diagram.
    The navigation system aerial is installed on the turret near the commander's hatch. The remainder of the system components is installed inside the tank.

Russia: the tanks of the Army put on wheels


The Russian Defense Ministry has decided to replace the caterpillars of most armored Army on wheels, announced to reporters Monday the head of the Russian Army, General Vladimir Tchirkine.

"The Russian Defense Ministry has decided to put most of the armored wheeled chassis. Work to develop the hardware on wheels began," said the general.

Russian drones can see obstacles



Russia may equip its drones with the so-called “technical vision” device that enables them to see and avoid obstacles, detect small-size objects and assess their potential danger. The system was created by a team of engineers at the Luch designer bureau, who say that it has no analogues in the world.

Installed onboard unmanned aircraft, it gives them capabilities that no other existing system can give, the bureau’s deputy chief designer Yevgeny Andriyevsky told the Voice of Russia: “Drones fitted with such a system can do what none of the existing analogues is able to do. They can fly at the lowest possible altitudes over zones with tall buildings and over rugged terrain of which there are no reliable maps and where a flight planning error might lead to the loss of the plane.”

The Luch-designed Vozdukhoplavatel (Aeronaut) drone is the only unmanned plane so far to have the “technical vision” system installed on it. But it is equally compatible with other types of drones. The small box-shaped device is stuffed with electronics, including a photo camera or a sensor that operates in infrared or radar bands and feeds all observation data into a special processing unit, Mr. Andriyevsky explained:

“The same unit processes all navigation data in real time and sends it to an operator on the ground, who either commands the drone to perform an evasive maneuver or this may happen automatically depending on the mode set by the operator.”

The Vozdukhoplavatel drone complex with an ejection system, a ground control station, a hydro-stabilized, miniature photo camera weighing 500 g was created at the request of a government agency. With a maximum flying time of two hours and maximum range of 30 km, it could be of great use for security operations and in other fields. Yevgeny Andriyevsky:

“These include all kinds of emergencies when there is no time to obtain the electronic map of a certain area, or there are no reliable maps, for as you know, cartographic data becomes outdated pretty soon. Our drones can be used by the Interior Ministry over fast-expanding urban areas, as for example Moscow or St. Petersburg where high-rise construction proceeds at so rapid a pace that maps are unable to catch up with it.”

Unmanned aircraft are robots, and as such they need sensors to be fit to do what they are supposed to. The obstacle avoidance system has successfully passed preliminary tests and may be recommended for use later this year.

AGS-30 automatic grenade launcher system of the second generation is a weapon that combines unique maneuverability, high firepower and long firing range.
The system can be used with a mount or turret as well as included into a remote controlled facility on different combat vehicles.
Small weight of the system provides exceptional mobility enabling its usage by infantry sub-units in rugged terrains and in urban areas.
It is first weapon of this type which can be transported with a mount in travelling position as well as in combat position by one operator.
GPD-30 round with HEF grenade provides high hitting probability, with a maximal range of fire: 2100 m. The opportunity of firing different 30 mm grenade launcher rounds is retained.
The main sight for mount and turret modifications is a panoramic optical sight, iron sight is also supplied. On a customer's request, AGS-30 can be fitted with day/night vision, radar sight can be used for controlling the situation and executing aimed fire under conditions of zero optical visibility.

OTs-03 7.62 mm sniper rifle is intended for hitting peronnel including those protected by body armour, unarmoured vehicles.
OTs-03 rifle features bull-pup layout on the basis of Dragunov sniper rifle that enabled reducing the overall length and retaining the barrel length and ballistic characteristics similar to those of SVD rifle.
The rifle is gas-operated, it improves practical rate of fire for self-loading version of the rifle.
OTs-03 is equipped with a folding telescopic bipod. The multi-purpose muzzle adapter suppresses the sound, hides the flash and reduces the recoil. The buttstock pivoted to the receiver absorbs a part of recoil energy by moving forward and improves accuracy. The rifle can be completed with different sights attached via upper or side brackets.

IMR-3M obstacle clearing vehicle Rosoboronexport - Russia

The IMR-3M engineer combat vehicle is intended for supporting troops advancing through areas destroyed by nuclear or conventional attacks and for carrying out missions on terrain contaminated by residual nuclear radiation or chemical warfare agents, as well as during rescue operations after natural and man-made disasters including accidents at atomic power stations.
The IMR-3M is a tracked armoured vehicle developed essentially from the T-72 MBT. A specific turret is mounted in the middle of the vehicle hull. A knuckled arm and a machine gun are installed in the turret. The TO1-KO4 fire control sight system makes it possible to provide accurate fire against ground targets at a distance up to 2000 m and air targets up to 1500 m.
Besides, the machine gun can destroy mines on the ground surface at a distance up to 60 m.
The vehicle special equipment includes a beam, general purpose bulldozing kit and track mine plough.
The ful rotating beam includes a telescopic knuckled arm. The arm can be used as a ripper, face and back digger, a clamshell (while digging out loose materials) or as a spreader (while loading heavy rocks and tree cutting).
The bulldozing kit can be used in double-breasted, bulldozer and grader modes with the crew staying inside the vehicle.
All manipulations are performed by using control panels installed in the driver's cabin and operator's turret. If necessary, the operator can operate the beam by using a remote panel.
The vehicle equipment enables to:
  • fill ditches, trenches, shell-holes
  • make crossover tracks and exit roads on slopes and river banks
  • break trails on ordinary ground, in forests and mountains, as well as on snow virgin lands
  • make passages and clear the debris in wreckages of I-III categories
  • dig the ground and load it in containers and vehicles
  • dig out bomb shelter exits
  • Plow up soils of I-IV categories (with some stones)
  • cut trees and pull stumps
The IMR-3M mine plough  can perform mine sweeping on soils of I-IV categories, as well as sweeping for mines fitted with proximity magnetic fuses.
The vehicle is equipped with a radio communication set and an intercom for crew members, as well as with fire extinguishing and radiation protection equipment. The IMR-3M vehicle is capable of conducting operations day and night, in any season and weather.

Modernized main battle tank T-90S is combat full-track vehicle equipped with powerful armament, up-to-date fire control system, reliable armour protection, and high manoeuvrability.
The new combat turret module is designed for upgraded MBT T-90S. In combination with powerful armament and highly-automated fire control system the module has considerably enhanced the tank combat potential.
The maximum efficiency of tank armament operation is achieved by provision of gunner's and commander's equal searching capabilities. It provides the fire control system with high performance mode "gunner-hunter", in which regardless of the time of the day commander observes the target environment, detects and recognizes the targets, carries out automatic tracking of the loaded-on targets, and the gunner for their destruction and continues searching new targets.
Remotely-operated machine gun mount stabilized in elevation and azimuth allows the commander being inside the tank to deliver effective fire from a halt and on the move irrespective of the mai armament.
To realize high fire power potential of 125 mm tank gun, the present-day ammunition types are used.
Besides, upgraded tank T-90S has the following advantages:
  •  Enhanced fire power thanks to installation of guided weapon system allowing hitting a target with high probability at a range up to 5000 m at any time of day and night and availability of automatic target tracker. Application of sights with computer vision channels provides invulnerability of operator's vision organs when enemy applies laser-beam neutralizing devices;
  • Enhanced protection thanks to installation of electromagnetic protection system providing protection from mines equipped with magneto metric fuzes and automatic screening system, protecting from missiles with semi-active laser homing heads.. Application of modular explosive reactive armour allows to enhance the protection level against current means of destruction;
  • Enhanced mobility thanks to installation of engine with high power-to-weight ratio and steering control system with automatic gear shifter which enhance the tank manoeuvrability and reduce requirements to driver's qualification.
The tank is equipped with auxiliary diesel-generator. It reduces not only petroleum consumption considerably, but also tank signature in the IR range.

Ural-AZ, Mrapeur Russian

The manufacturer Ural, part of the GAZ Group, presented its first MRAP Eurosatory, between tradition and modernity, but closer it seems that the tradition of modernity ... The Ural-ZA is based on an old frame 6 × 6 which has been grafted an armored cab, extended by a transport compartment capable of receiving a dozen soldiers. The seats are placed in two rows backed to the wall. Access is by a wide rear door opening hydraulically assisted. The vehicle also offers tapes for roof and the possibility of installing a manned turret or a remote-controlled weapon. The vehicle was given to 24 tons, with an engine developing 450 hp and a six-speed automatic gearbox. According to its manufacturer, the Ural-ZA would provide protection against the tires of small arms, shrapnel and mines. We ask to see ... No level of protection corresponding to a NATO standard is given. The architecture of the truck is also very traditional, certainly with a sloping floor to deflect the blast of explosions, but still low to the ground. It is also easy to notice the low clearance of the undercarriage and the general lack of ground clearance vehicle. It is then in the presence of a real or a simple MRAP truck equipped with a concrete bunker?Ural announces that produced two prototypes and focus now on making a first preproduction batch.

Russian Military to Get New Pistol

The Russian Armed Forces will take delivery of a new 9-mm handgun to replace the aging Makarov pistol in the next few months, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said on Wednesday.
“We are certifying a new pistol, the Strizh, which will replace the Makarov pistol in the next few months,” said Rogozin, who oversees the defense industry, in an interview with Rossiya 24 television.
The Makarov pistol has been the standard issue weapon or the Russian military and police for over 60 years.
Strizh has been developed by a Russian private company, Arsenal Firearms, with the advice of special forces instructors.
The new handgun has better performance than the Austrian-made Glock 17, a favorite of special forces worldwide, Rogozin said.
The weapon has a slim-profile polymer frame, an easy-to-rack slide with rear and front serrations, an ambidextrous magazine release and a Picatinny rail for mounting special sights. The pistol also has three safety mechanisms to prevent accidental firing.
Strizh holds 18-round or 30-round ammunition clips, and can be equipped with a flashlight and a laser sight.
It can also be fitted with a longer barrel and used as a machine-pistol.

Russia Brings New Products to Eurosatory 2012: T-90S

Russian enterprises will promote a number of their newest developments at the Eurosatory 2012 International Land Security and Defence exhibition held in Paris, France, on 11-15 June 2012. Major items of interest are the T-90S MBT upgrade, BMPT tank support combat vehicle, Kornet-EM antitank missile system based on the Tigr armoured car, and Ural 6x6 hardened truck.
 
Specialists will focus their attention on the T-90S upgrade in the first place. They consider it a virtually new tank judging by the number of innovations introduced, and one of the best in the world arms market by the cumulative combat performance criteria.
 
The BMPT tank support combat vehicle is another development that has no equals in the world. Its powerful weapons set and heavy armour protection correspond well with the Russian nickname "Terminator".
 
The Kornet-E antitank missile system is quite popular on the world arms market is perceived as a modern anti-armour weapon system. However, Russian developers have succeeded in substantially extending range of fire of its new modification - the Kornet-EM. The Kornet-EM antitank missile system can also engage small-size aerial targets.
 
The Ural type trucks are actively employed in many countries and have proved their reliability and effectiveness not only in combat actions but in peace-keeping and rescue operations as well. The new Ural truck is designed with due account of experience gained in modern conflicts, is heavily armoured and fitted with enhanced anti-mine protection.
 
Air defence systems make up an equally important part of the exhibition. For many years Russia has been maintaining leading positions in this area. Year by year there is a growing demand for air defence systems such as Tor-M2E, Pantsir-S1, Buk-M2E, Igla-S. Lessons drawn from recent military conflicts show that a state-of-the-art air defence system is an important prerequisite to upkeep national security and sovereignity. Russia is among few countries which produce all kinds of air defence equipment, and is capable of building a nationwide air defence system for a customer country on the integrated approach basis.
 
Rosoboronexport, JSC believes that Russian exposition will be one of the most attractive and memorable at this exhibition. "We have been participating in the Eurosatory exhibitions since 1996, but this year's show is special. Russia has never brought such a number of full-scale new items. They are from the latest developments that clearly demonstrate a huge potential of the Russian defence industry", - says Igor Sevastyanov, deputy director general of Rosoboronexport, JSC and head of the joint delegation of the Russian Technologies State Corporation and Rosoboronexport.
 
Exports of Russian defence equipment for land forces have been steadily rising in recent years. According to forecasts, this trend will be sustained. Which is particularly true regarding Russian heavy armoured vehicles, multiple rocket launchers, artillery systems, infantry combat vehicles, guided munitions. Russian-made armoured personnel carriers and small arms are in constant demand as well.
 
At Eurosatory 2012 Rosoboronexport will conduct a great number of talks with both traditional and potential partners. Many meetings are planned also with representatives of European companies. Special emphasis will be made on contacts with leading French defence manufacturers.
 
Military technical cooperation with France has been growing fast in recent years. We are interested, first of all, in joint research and development. This kind of cooperation does not fall into the 'buyer-seller' category: it demands a wider cooperation to develop effective self-defence assets, including those for third countries. By combining our efforts we obtain a very strong synergistic effect. It is well seen, for example, in our projects with Thales, Safran and Sagem companies", - notes Igor Sevastyanov.
 
At the end of the last year a dedicated workgroup was set up to facilitate expansion of the Russian-French cooperation into the land forces equipment area. Its first meeting took place in January 2012, and the next one is scheduled for this June-end. «Rosoboronexport» wants as many as possible Russian developers and manufacturers to get involved in the workgroup activities to help define most prospective projects and ways of their implementation.
 
Rosoboronexport also pays special attention to upgrading earlier supplied materiel. At present there are hundreds of land forces equipment items repaired and upgraded under contracts in various countries. Russia offers an integrated approach to upgrading the materiel with several options for consideration at a time depending on customer requirements.
 
At Eurosatory 2012 «Rosoboronexport» provides detailed information on nearly 200 items of Russian weapons and equipment presented in total at Eurosatory 2012.

In the spotlight:
 
• T-90S MBT upgrade: Tank designers improved all combat characteristics of the famous T-90S MBT including its fire power, command and control capability, mobility and protection. Its redesigned turret features an upgraded 125-mm gun, an advanced fire control system, new communication, positioning and interoperation facilities, as well as a remotely controlled 7.62-mm machine gun. The designers managed to retain the tank's relatively small weight while increasing substantially its protection. The tank turret provides protection against all existing munitions thanks to the efficient layout, differentiated armour and new explosive reactive armour application. The upgraded tank features a steering wheel type turn drive and an automatic gearbox which allow improving its controllability. The tank engine is also seriously modified and has its power uprated to 1,130 hp.
 
• BMPT tank support combat vehicle: The BMPT tank support combat vehicle combines powerful weapons with heavy armour protection which facilitate armour support operations, in particular by defeating tank-dangerous targets of an antitank missile system crews type, as well as autonomous operations to reinforce infantry units, protect troop columns and installations, and defeat terrorist groups. The BMPT weapons set includes two 30-mm 2A42 automatic guns, two Ataka-T supersonic antitank missile launchers, two AG-17D automatic grenade launchers, and one 7.62-mm machine gun. The vehicle's fire control system includes a multichannel sight and a panoramic low-level light television (LLTV) sight, providing detection and identification of small-size targets at long ranges by day and night in adverse weather conditions. Three operators in the BMPT provide quick detection and engagement of three different targets in the all-round sector.
 
• Kornet-EM antitank missile system based on the Tigr armoured car: Integration of the automatic target tracker allows the Kornet-EM to realise the fire-and-forget principle with enhanced target tracking accuracy and kill probability in the entire range envelope. The Kornet-EM's range of fire extends from 8 to 10 km depending on ammunition type. Its missile with shaped charge warhead can penetrate up to 1,100-1,300 mm thick armour plates. The new weapon system is also capable of engaging air targets, including unmanned aerial vehicles, helicopters, diving attack aircraft, which qualitatively increases combat potential of units on the battlefield. The Kornet-EM antitank missile system presented at the exhibition is mounted on the chassis of the Tigr armoured car which is successfully operated in Russia by power agencies and exported abroad. Its main features are reliability, good cross-country ability, large capacity, and high level armour protection.
