Ukraine to Create European-like Armed Forces – General Staff

Ukraine will carry out a military reform to make its armed forces “modern” and “European-like,” first deputy chief of the country’s General Staff of the Armed Forces, Vice Adm. Ihor Kabanenko, said on Monday.

“The goal [of the military reform] is to create in Ukraine a modern European-like armed forces, small in numbers but well-trained, properly supported, mobile and professional,” he said.

Kabanenko said that the Ukrainian military faces “a misbalance between those who really perform combat tasks and those who support them” that should be corrected.

He also said that Ukraine’s defense minister ordered to triple financing of military equipment upgrades and double financing of maintenance costs, with aviation and naval equipment being top priorities.
