Nine Italian firms have expressed their firm commitment to ASEAN’s
first defence and security hub, the Malaysian Defence and Security
Technology Park (MDSTP) in Sungkai, Perak. This comes after the signing
of MoU during the Farnborough Airshow between the park’s developer,
Masterplan Consulting Sdn Bhd and companies own by Finmeccanica
conglomerate on investments and technological collaborations between
Malaysia and Italy at the park.
The MoU signatories are SELEX Sistemi Integrati, SELEX Galileo, AgustaWestland, Alenia Aermacchi, SELEX Elsag, Telespazio, SIIT Liguria Technological District and Whitehead Alenia Sistemi Subacquei. The collaboration areas are defence and security industries, with emphasis on R&D, manufacturing, MRO and commercialization. The latest development has brought to 21 the total number of companies committed to invest in the park.

SELEX Sistemi Integrati, is a company that designs and develops Large Systems for Homeland Protection, systems and radar sensors for air defence, battlefield management, naval warfare, coastal and maritime surveillance, air traffic control and turn-key airport solutions. SELEX Galileo on the other hand is a major defence electronics company that specialises in surveillance, protection, tracking, targeting, navigation and control, and imaging systems. The company is well known for its Falco UAS and is a major avionic supplier for Eurofighter Typhoon.

While AgustaWestland is a household name for helicopter manufacturing, Alenia Aermacchi is an Italian company designing and producing trainer aircraft for military pilots. Among its product are SF-260, MB-326, M-311, MB-339CD and M-346. Through international collaboration, Alenia Aermacchi has been producing the AMX, the Panavia Tornado, the Eurofighter Typhoon and the C-27J Sparta.

Telespazio is a space systems services company. The RMN uses torpedo product manufactured by the Whitehead Alenia Sistemi Subacquei for its Jebat class frigate, Perdana Menteri class submarine as well as its Super Lynx Mk 300 naval helicopter.
Other foreign investors in the MDSTP include Stratsec.Net Sdn. Bhd, Huawei Technologies (M) Sdn. Bhd., ZKZ Technologies Sdn. Bhd and Caibros International Sdn. Bhd.
