From 25 to 31 May 2012, the 3rd Brigade of the Afghan National Army (ANA) and Afghan police forces, supported by the Task Force La Fayette (TFLF), planned and conducted a security operation in Tagab Valley, Hunting Spear operation 7.
700 men from five kandaks (battalions) and Afghan police, supported by 300 French soldiers were prosecuted and the security actions taken by the ANA since December 2011 in Kapisa, in the valleys of Tagab and Alasay.
The operation began on May 25 evening, with infiltration and implementation support by French helicopters on the heights of Tagab Valley.
By the end of the night, Afghan troops of infantry kandaks are made to recognize the axes defined in the planning of the operation.
During this implementation, the elements from Afghanistan have been severely taken to parties. They then returned fire, supported by the French Tiger helicopters and coalition aircraft.
Afghan police, local and national, spoke in support. Several insurgents were neutralized. Others have retreated.
These commitments have allowed the ANA to start construction of police checkpoints at strategic locations to secure the main roads in Tagab Valley.
Over the following days of clashes, less intense, continued. Afghan soldiers spotted the insurgent positions. They guided their own support and mortars designated targets for French air assets and coalition. Coordination between the Afghan army and police helped to control these threats effectively. The insurgents could not prevent the achievement of objectives set by the ANA.
Finally, three Afghan soldiers were killed in the fighting and about twenty wounded. Despite these losses, the determination of the Afghan forces allowed them to neutralize a dozen insurgents, injuring a dozen and capturing two in which a leader. 3 monitoring stations were built.
Afghan police and security tightened its grip in the region of Tagab.
Hunting Spear 7 was the first major of the 3rd Brigade at the beginning of the warm season, while the insurgents are most active.
