Italy and Russia seeking markets for their submarine "tropical" S1000

Italy and Russia intend to seek markets this year for their conventional submarine S1000, designed primarily to tropical areas, an official said Saturday the Russian Rubin design office, Andrei Baranov.

"Our goal now is to take advantage of international arms fairs to meet actual customers," said Baranov commenting reviving this joint project, launched in the early 2000s.

Asked about possible areas of sales, he said that "there are signals from Bangladesh, Burma, the Philippines and Thailand."

He added that "many African countries are seriously considering the possibility of buying their submarines to naval forces. Another area of ​​interest is the Middle East and we hope to have fruitful contacts during the exhibition IDEX 2013 "to be held from February 17 to 21 in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates).

The Russian Rubin design office is the main developer of the project S1000 pursuant to a contract signed between Rosoboronexport and the Italian Ministry of Defence in 2004. But the basic version of submarine equipment produced in Russia as in Italy or in other European countries are used.


The submarine moves S100 classic 1100 tons, is 56.2 m long. It can reach a speed of over 14 knots and can dive more than 250 m. In addition to a crew of 16 members, it can accommodate a squad of 6 members. Optionally it can be equipped with a propulsion or cruise missiles.

The submarine was designed for use in tropical waters between the islands, mostly shallow.
