Expert: China's aircraft carrier may use upgraded version of J-11 fighters
China's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, is over 300 meters long and over 70 meters wide. The distance from the keel to the top of the mainmast is over 60 meters. There are 10 decks below the main deck, and nine levels of island-style superstructures above the main deck, making the aircraft carrier look like a 20-story building. The Liaoning has a normal displacement of more than 50,000 tons.
Aircraft carriers top all other types of large ships in tonnage, size, and operational capability, and are hailed as "floating airports." The island-style superstructures at the starboard side of an aircraft carrier are the command center for flight-deck operations, as well as the ship as a whole.
Modern carrier-based aircraft take off in mainly three ways: catapult assisted takeoff, ski-jump takeoff, and vertical takeoff. The Liaoning can carry fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters as designed.
Although there are no carrier-based aircraft on the flight deck of the Liaoning, the aircraft carrier is fully equipped for aircraft takeoff and landing.

China to name its first aircraft carrier 'Liaoning'
China will name its first aircraft
carrier "Liaoning" in honor of the province where it was retrofitted,
the Southern Metropolitan Daily reported, citing an authoritative
source.
The paper confirmed that officials
decided to name the carrier to commend the province where it was
renovated and repaired, thus Liaoning.
The carrier, often referred to by its
original name Varyag, is a retired Soviet-era vessel that China bought
from Ukraine in the late 1990s. The carrier was later harbored in
Dalian, Liaoning Province, where it was retrofitted.
The vessel began sea trails in August
2011 and on September 3 received the side designation "16," prompting
speculation that the vessel had completed basic trails and would soon be
commissioned.

China patrol vessel heads to Hawaii for joint exercises
The Haixun 31 maritime patrol vessel, one of China's biggest maritime
patrol ships, will set out for its first visit to the United States on
Saturday.
Scheduled to depart from Shanghai at 10:30 am, Haixun 31 is expected to arrive in Hawaii on Sept 4. It will be there for five days to work with the US Coast Guard on a series of maritime cooperation exercises, including a field test of joint search-and-rescues.
Issues such as Sino-US maritime safety management, water traffic safety and disaster relief will also be discussed.
"It's our first time to send a maritime patrol boat to visit the US. It's also our first time to send helicopters on a patrol ship for a long voyage," said Cao Desheng, deputy director of the Ministry of Transport's water transport bureau, adding that the helicopters will be used for the marine search-and-rescue.
Gene Maestas, public-affairs officer of the Hawaii-based 14th Coast Guard District under the US Department of Homeland Security, confirmed the upcoming joint search-and-rescue operation.
"China's largest maritime patrol ship will visit the US for the first time, which is part of the joint statement released by the US-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue in May this year," Maestas told China Daily earlier this week.

Chinese aircraft carrier will have a provincial name
china's first aircraft carrier will be commissioned by the end of the year and is very likely to be named after one of China's provinces, a military expert said yesterday.
All the necessary facilities have been
installed on the carrier through the nine sea trials since last August,
Li Jie, a researcher of the China Navy Military Academy, said in an
interview carried on the People's Daily website.
China has three major naval forces - the
East China Sea, North China Sea and South China Sea fleets. Many
speculated the aircraft carrier will join the South China Sea fleet to
stabilize the situation in tension there, but Li said the vessel could
be commissioned in different fleets.
However, the aircraft carrier will be mainly used for training and experiments, he said.
The carrier completed its ninth sea
trial last month, the longest yet, and returned to the Port of Dalian in
northeastern Liaoning Province.

China Aircraft carrier home after longest trial
China's aircraft carrier, known as the Varyag, has completed its ninth sea trial, the longest yet, and returned to the Port of Dalian in northeastern Liaoning Province yesterday.
However, military officials confirmed it will continue to carry out tests rather than be commissioned today as predicted by some experts.
There are still many tests to be done before it can become a combat platform, Lin Bai, a colonel of the General Armament Department of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, told a press conference yesterday.
"The Great Wall wasn't built in a day, we hope people can treat the issue rationally and objectively," Lin said.
The sea trials have been running smoothly so far and attained anticipated objectives, while the next tests and training tasks had yet to be decided, he added.
Five tugboats drew the vessel back into port yesterday morning after the 25-day sea trial.
The carrier first carried out tests in the north Bohai Sea and then headed further east for a one-day exercise in the Yellow Sea on Sunday, China News Service reported.

The navy of Venezuela wants to rehabilitate its kind Lupo frigates with the help of China
Venezuelan Navy is coordinating with the Chinese shipbuilding industry the necessary studies for the rehabilitation of such Lupo frigates, said its commander, Admiral Alfredo Diego Molero Bellavia.
Admiral Molero said the six frigates suffered for over 7 years, the work of restoration and modernization, including unionized workers to shipyards Astilleros Nacionales CA, Puerto Cabello.
"We were victims of a sort of boycott of technology from the North American empire (...) and this has led to considerable delay in the work," said Molero, referring to the ban by the United States in 2006 to purchase equipment and technology U.S. military.
In 1975, Venezuela had asked the Italian shipyard Cantieri Navali Riuniti SpA., To build six frigates Lupo, who were delivered between 1980 and 1982: Mariscal Sucre, Almirante Brión, General Urdaneta, General Soublette, General Almirante GarcÃa Salom and .
The Mariscal Sucre and the Almirante Brión were modernized between 1998 and 2002 by Ingalls Shipbuilding shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi. The contract provided for technology transfer and personnel training for the modernization of Venezuelan frigates 4 remaining in Venezuela.
In 2004, the frigate General Urdaneta, General Salom and Almirante GarcÃa entered the Dianca sites, where they are always, without the work has been completed.

Algeria buying Chinese frigates
Algeria has signed a contract with China Shipbuilding Trading Company for three light frigates, after ordering two Meko A-200N frigates from Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems.
The three light frigates will be built either at Guangzhou or the Shanghai Huangpu Shipyard. The vessels will displace around 2 800 tons fully loaded, and will be powered by MTU diesel engines.
The Algerian Navy has been undergoing expansion in recent years as it faces problems such as smuggling, illegal migration and indigenous terrorism. These threats mainly affect Algeria's harbours and maritime communication routes and ships passing through the Straits of Gibraltar. Consequently, the Algerian Navy maintains a well-trained and well-equipped fleet to provide security to more than 1000 km of coastline.
On March 26 this year Algeria’s ministry of defence signed a contract with ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) for two Meko A-200 frigates with an option for two more, after a year of negotiations.
TKMS will supply two Meko A-200 frigates and six AgustaWestland Super Lynx helicopters under the €2 175 520 000 contract. According to Russia’s Periscope magazine, the ships will be armed with RBS 15 Mk III anti-ship missiles, Umkhonto IR surface-to-air missiles, Oto Melara and Rheinmetall guns and MU 90 torpedoes. The helicopters will be equipped with Mokopa air-to-ground missiles.
ThyssenKrupp delivered four Meko A-200 stealth frigates to the South African Navy: the SAS Amatola, SAS Isandlwana, SAS Spioenkop and the SAS Mendi. The frigates feature exterior stealth designs and use a combination of water jet propulsion systems with a conventional diesel engines.
In the middle of last year it was announced that Algeria had signed a deal with Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation and state arms exporter Rosoboronexport for two new Tiger class corvettes. The Tiger corvette (Project 20382) is an export model of the Project 20380 Steregushchy class, which is the Russian Navy’s newest corvette class.
The vessel can be equipped with a variety of weaponry, including 100 or 76.2 mm guns, 14.5 mm machine guns, 533 mm torpedoes and a variety of surface-to-air and surface-to-surface missiles (e.g. P-800 Oniks, Uran-E or Yakhont). In addition, the vessels have capacity for a helicopter.
According to the IISS’s The Military Balance 2012, Algeria’s surface fleet comprises of three 1970s-era Koni class antisubmarine frigates, six corvettes, 22 patrol and coastal combat vessels, three amphibious vessels and three logistics and support ships.
In June 2006 Rosoboronexport signed a contract with the Algerian Navy for the construction of two Project 636 Improved Kilo class submarines under a roughly US$400 million contract.
Construction of the first submarine started in 2006 and the second began in 2007. They were handed over to the Algerian Navy in March and September 2010 where they joined two Project 877EKM Kilo diesel electric submarines, which Algeria received in 1987-1988.
Russia is presently upgrading a Nanuchka II class corvette and a Koni II class frigate for the Algerian Navy and will hand them over in July. Algeria and the Severnaya Verf shipyard signed a contract in 2007 for the overhaul of three warships of each class. Russia delivered the first pair, consisting of a Project 1234E Nanuchka II class corvette (Rais Hamidou) and a Project 1159T Koni II class frigate (Mourad Rais), to Algeria in February 2011.

China has passed the sea trials of its first aircraft carrier
The first Chinese aircraft carrier built on the basis of Soviet Varyag aircraft carrier, has suffered in its sea trials in August, announced Wednesday the spokesman of the Chinese Ministry of Defense, Yujun Yang.
"The construction of an aircraft carrier is a long term project that involves making a series of tests and exercises. Sea trials, which have recently taken place, have succeeded," he said.
Begin construction in the Soviet Union, this warship was sold unfinished to China by Ukraine in 1988 and towed to the port of Dalian. In 2005, Beijing has begun work towards completing its construction and design of naval aircraft.
Experts say it will take several years to complete fitting out the vessel before putting into operation.
