The Gulf of Guinea, new stronghold of the pirates (Russian admiral)



The pirates have intensified their activity off the west coast of Africa and the Gulf of Guinea region which becomes the second home after the Somalia piracy, said the commander of the Russian Navy, Viktor Chirkov, interviewed by RIA Novosti.

"A rise in pirate activity is discovered by the Russian and international services not only in the Gulf of Aden but also in the Gulf of Guinea. This is slowly becoming the second stronghold of piracy from Somalia," said Vice-Admiral Chirkov.

Hackers use different tactics depending on the region, he added.

"In the Gulf of Guinea pirates merely to plunder ships and do not in general hostage for ransom," said the interlocutor of the agency.

For several years, piracy is a major threat against shipping in the Gulf of Aden. The naval mission Atalanta anti-piracy EU was launched in 2008 and the mission Nato Ocean Shield in 2009. Russian warships to ensure the safety of navigation in the region since 2008.
