Terrorist squads in the Judea and Samaria region are using cellular
devices to detonate explosives against Israel Defense Forces (IDF)
forces and Israeli civilians. To counter this threat, IDF forces in the
sector are using special means.
In recent years, the use of such devices had dropped significantly, but since the second half of 2011 there has been an increase. The IDF’s Central Command has also noticed an improvement in camouflage of the devices and the operational methods used by terrorists. However, the explosive materials and casings used have not changed.
The most recent incident involving such a device occurred in mid-April, when an explosive was detonated against an IDF vehicle near Yatta, in the Hebron area. There were no injuries or damage in the incident.
Last week, indictments were issued in a military court against two Yatta residents, who were arrested by the IDF and Shin Bet. They were indicted for a number of offenses, including planting bombs, producing explosive devices, weapons possession, arms dealing, and military training, among other things.
In 2011, there were five cases of the phenomenon, the most noteworthy of which was the March attack in Jerusalem in which a British woman was killed and 35 people were wounded after an explosive that had been planted at a bus station was detonated remotely.
