Chilean sub leaves Mayport

A Chilean sub will head to sea once again after training at Naval Station Mayport.
The SS-21 Simpson arrived at Mayport on November 26, 2012 as part of the Diesel Electronic Submarine Initiative allowing the US Navy to work and train with smaller submarines.  The Chilean Navy is also able to work with the Navy’s Aircraft Carrier Strike Groups which they don’t often experience.
The submarine also train and test underwater warfare capabilities through various operations.
Despite budget uncertainty which has delayed the deployment of the USS Gettysburg from Mayport Friday, I confirmed with Mayport officials that the sub’s departure will continue as scheduled.
