Karzai confirms he will relinquish power in 2014

Afghan President Hamid Karzai said Tuesday in Oslo intention to cede power next year at the end of its mandate.

The question of my posture as president beyond 2014 is irrelevant, Karzai said, when asked by the press on impulses that are sometimes lent to run his own succession.

I do not want a third term and the Constitution does not allow. There will be an election and a new president comes, he told a press conference.

Karzai was elected in 2004 and reelected in 2009 in an election marred by accusations of fraud.

The next presidential election is scheduled for Afghanistan in April 2014, a few months before the end of the combat mission of NATO in this country.

My greatest legacy is that Afghanistan, for the first time in its history, elects its second consecutive democratically elected president, said Karzai.

It has stated in the past that it does not cling to beyond 2014, including during a meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama last month, but not completely silence the speculation about a possible maintenance.

During his visit to Oslo, Norway renewed its commitment to provide annual aid to 2017 from 750 million kronor (101 million euros) in this country is among the poorest but also among the most corrupt world.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg stressed that this partnership - formalizing promises of aid already expressed in the past - was subject to a commitment by the Afghan authorities to promote good governance, rule of law, human rights, transparency and democracy.

We have zero tolerance for corruption, he said, noting that his country had already suspended its development aid in the past proven cases of diversion.

Second largest recipient of Norwegian aid, Afghanistan is perceived as the most corrupt country in the world along with North Korea and Somalia, according to a ranking of Transparency International.
