Another first for the Mamba

The French Air Force has succeeded March 6, 2013, with the Italian Army, for the first time in an architecture involving NATO intercepted a target representative of a theater ballistic missile by the soil-air medium-range SAMP called Mamba. After about 300 miles of ballistic flight, and with a relative speed of about Mach 8 at impact, the target was destroyed by a missile interceptor ASTER 30.

The system was connected to the SAMP and a NATO early warning radar network via a data link L16 representative of an operational system.

This shot technical and operational evaluation was conducted at DGA center of Biscarrosse missile tests, together with the fourth regiment of artillery Mantova (Italy) and the team brand air defense center experience air military (CEAM) of Mont-de-Marsan, supported by the staff and equipment of the brigade's air space control (OLES) of the Air Force Command (CFA), more particularly the defense squadron ground- air (EDSA) 12/950 "Tursan" Mont de Marsan and Support Command Air Forces (SCAF).

This success follows two successful shots in October 2010 and November 2011 against the same type of threat. It is a further step taken in the rise of the SAMP in the Air Force and demonstrate the capabilities of the weapon system and staff who serve to counter a missile threat in a theater NATO framework.

The advantages of SAMP, called Mamba by the French Air Force, include the zone defense to 360 °, range, firepower, agility missile, modularity, the ability to simultaneously treat all modern type of aerial targets, the ability to integrate into various chains of command and the ability to protect deployed forces through mobility.

System deployment continues in the Air Force. After the EDSA Luxeuil, Mont de Marsan and Avord, today is the Saint-Dizier receiving the SAMP. The squadron will Istres, meanwhile, equipped by 2014.
