Russia and Tajikistan signed an agreement on the extension of the lease of the Russian military base on the territory of Tajikistan, Dushanbe said Friday the adviser of Russian President Yuri Ushakov.
"The agreement establishes conditions favorable enough for Russia de facto, no rent for the parking of our military equipment is received," reported M.Ouchakov reporters.
He recalled that the last agreement regulating the presence of the Russian base in Tajikistan was signed on 25 May 1993 and came to an end in 2014. The new document will remain in effect until 2042, with subsequent extensions of five years.
Tajikistan is home to the 201st Russian military base. This is the most important Russian base abroad, its workforce totaling around 7,000 men. Negotiations on the presence of this base on Tajik territory takes place since 2008. For the moment, Russia does not pay rent for the base, providing modern weapons and military equipment and special Tajikistan, which is not officially considered a rent.
