22 Azerbaijanis sentenced for spying for Iran

Baku court for serious crimes was sentenced Tuesday to 22 Azerbaijani citizens prison sentences of 10 to 15 years for spying for the benefit of Iranian Revolutionary Guards (Sepah), told RIA Novosti spokesman of the court.

These individuals were arrested earlier this year as part of special operations conducted by the Ministry of National Security of Azerbaijan.

According to the ministry statement dated March 14, under the Criminal Code of the Azerbaijan Republic, the 22 people arrested were accused of espionage against the sovereignty and national security and other serious crimes, including treason, "illegal acquisition, possession and transfer of firearms and ammunition."


In 1999 the group began to spy in Azerbaijan on behalf of Tehran, and all its members have acquired weapons to commit terrorist attacks against diplomats and foreign businessmen.
