The Norwegian military is increasing the number of Iveco light armored vehicles in its fleet with a new order for the Italian-built machines.
Iveco Defence Vehicles announced Jan. 29 that the Norwegian Defence Logistics Organisation had agreed to buy 62 of the machines, which are known internationally as the Light Multirole Vehicle (LMV).
The value of the deal was not released, nor was an expected timeline.
The procurement brings total LMV purchases by the Norwegians to 170. Norway and other LMV customers have used the machines extensively in Afghanistan.
The new vehicles destined for Norway will be equipped either with a manual weapon turret or a remote weapon station from Norwegian supplier Kongsberg.
The deal also includes logistic support of current and future vehicles.
Procurement of the Iveco vehicles coincides with a general strengthening of Norwegian armored vehicle capabilities. Last year, Norway contracted BAE Systems to supply new CV90 armored fighting vehicles and update the existing fleet in a $750 million deal.
More than 4,000 LMVs have been sold to date, with Italy, Belgium, Russia and the U.K. the biggest customers.
