China plans to strengthen its military ties with the United States

Senior military officials have called for more efforts to promote military ties between China and the United States.

"The two sides should, in the context of building a cooperative partnership, to promote an active and pragmatic a new type of military relations characterized by equality, reciprocity and win-win cooperation," said the Chinese Minister of National Defense Liang Guanglie.

Liang made the remarks at a joint press conference with U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, currently visiting China, held at the end of their discussion on military ties.

China and the U.S. should explore a path of coexistence and establish new relationships that correspond to their influence, said Liang.

He urged both sides to enhance mutual trust, understanding of defense policies and strategic directions respectively, and to promote dialogue and communication.

Both parties must resolve their differences appropriately and respect the fundamental interests of all, he added.
