Defense Minister Ismet Yilmaz says Ankara, Sunday, August 12, 2012, has
bought 50 Husky
Visor 2500 mine detection vehicles from Washington.
Turkish media outlets quoted Yilmaz as saying on Saturday, August 11, 2012, that the $115-million purchase has been made to use the Husky vehicles in operations to clear the southeastern Turkish border areas of mines allegedly planted by the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).
Yilmaz also stated that more than 200 Turkish soldiers have been killed in ‘PKK mine explosions’ in the southeastern border areas over the past ten years.
In addition to mine detection, the Husky Visor 2500 vehicles are capable of shooting fixed and moving targets.
Reports say Ankara has made major investments to increase defensive capabilities against the PKK through arms deals made with Washington and the Israeli regime over the past three years.
