New Yasen-class submarine faces further delays

he Severodvinsk nuclear Yasen-class multipurpose attack submarine will go into service no earlier than 2013, Interfax reported on Monday, citing a source in the military-industrial complex.

The delay is already the second occasion when the launch of the cutting-edge submarine has been postponed, Gazeta.ru reported.

Tests ongoing

During trials, the Severodvinsk revealed that its nuclear power plant does not produce the planned power levelsAnd the boat does not meet the required noise levelsWith suchserious shortcomings the ship can not be accepted into the military fleet,” Interfax quoted the military source as saying.

A further problem besetting the delayed craft was a lack of weapons – namely new tailored target-seeking torpedoes.

“The new torpedoes with the required characteristics are still not ready. The product that has been created is highly volatile and therefore can not be used to arm submarines,” said the source. He added that if the delays continued for too long, torpedoes of the type that exploded on the ill-fated Kursk submarine might have to be used.

Fines for the constructors

In March of this year, RIA Novosti quoted a highly placed source in the military as saying that by the end of 2012 three new submarines were planned to enter service – the Borei-class submarines Yury Dolgoruky and Alexander Nevsky and the Yasen-class Severodvinsk.

For the remainder of 2012, the Severodvinsk will undergo sea testing to check its missile systems, electronic warfare systems and internal systems.

On Aug. 8, First Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Sukhorukov said that testing should be finished this year as “penalties are building up every day for the construction plant.”

Long-term plans call for eight Yasen-class submarines to be deployed in the Russian fleet by 2020. The Severodvinsk is estimated to have cost 47 billion rubles, Newsru.com reported.
