Defence IQ, the leading online resource for news and analysis in the military and defense, today announced the release of its 2012 report on social media in the defense industry (Social Media in Defence 2012 Report). This report focuses on the use of social media within the defense industry and focuses primarily on the commercial sector, examining the benefits, if any, that social media offer to subcontractors and organizations defense. A complete copy of the report is available here: Social Media in the defense industry in 2012
"The use of social media in the defense industry, including a business perspective, has been limited so far," said Andrew Elwell, Editor in Chief at Defence IQ. "While the report indicates that there is a resistance from the industry, these perceptions tend to change. Most people who responded to the survey said they intend to make sweeping changes to their social media policy in the coming years, because they offer many advantages in terms of brand awareness and thought leadership. "
The report also examines the use of social media in a broader context, examining how the media and journalists of the defense sector using social media as a tool to learn more about the industry and engage with suppliers.
"Upon arrival, many new technologies are often regarded with suspicion until the benefits become evident from their use," said Mr. Elwell. "However, indications are that in five or ten years, the same conclusions of this report for future leaders seem strange, because having a strong online presence and strategy in terms of engaging social media will be crucial, whatever the sector in which you operate.
