Collision in the Persian Gulf between U.S. submarine and a ship unidentified

Thursday morning, before daybreak, the periscope of a U.S. submarine was damaged in a collision with an unidentified ship, said the U.S. Navy.

Nobody was injured aboard the submarine USS Jacksonville.

The submarine then surfaced to see if the collision had damaged the other ship, but he continued on his way, showing no signs of distress, or even that he had reported anything be.

According to a U.S. official, the submarine was diving when there was a slight shock. When the crew wanted to see what had happened, they were unable to raise the periscope. By raising the other periscope, they found that the former had been ripped off and a ship - perhaps a fishing boat - walked away, without having suffered any damage it seems.

The U.S. Navy has tried to contact the ship and determine who he was and what was his nationality, without success. She also checked the rollover images of the area and found no sign of the vessel in distress.

In its statement, the U.S. Navy says one of the two periscopes Jacksonville has been damaged. A maritime patrol aircraft P-3 Orion searched the area but did not see any debris or water vessel in distress.
